The Future of Jiu-Jitsu

ORIGIN RIFT BJJ GI - Made in America

We asked ourselves, what would we build if we started from scratch. If we stripped away cost, not having the right technology or machinery. If we said the only hurdle was our minds, what would we design for the sport of Jiu-Jitsu.

10,000 hours of gi manufacturing knowledge in one room, and a blank slate. We approached the equation with open minds. How does the body move on the ground? How does the body move when wrapped in the fabric? How does the fabric move against the vinyl mat? How do these three things work together? More importantly,  how do they work AGAINST one another? Where does it bind and how can we free your body from friction?

What fiber works best? How should it be woven? And most importantly, how should we map it, not just to the human form… how should it map to your body DURING DYNAMIC MOTION?

It started with the idea that to wrap a piece of paper around a sphere and get it smooth would be impossible. But taking that same paper and cutting strips will allow you to spiral the paper around the sphere, becoming smooth and streamlined. This concept led us in the direction of a multi panel, body mapping system called the ORIGIN™ Spiral Wrap Cut©. Which utilizes seven panels of fabric, starting from the spine, the panels spiral symmetrically around your body.

We also asked, how should it stretch, or should it stretch? If the fiber was right, if the yarn was right, if the textile was woven right, why would we need extra reinforcement panels? Can we make it stronger and lighter, stripped down, lightweight like a performance car?

The answer to all these questions took 12 months, undocumented hours of research and development, and 100,000 dollars in custom machinery. We didn’t know the answer until we could test the equation in physical form. The answer was… YES!

We developed a proprietary, pre-shrunk PolySynth© yarn, engineered to be 10x stronger than our existing yarn, and 100x stronger than the industry standard. When twisted, the hexagonal structure of the staple fibers interlock with one another, allowing moisture to pass between the weave, but not get absorbed into the yarn itself. This would be the foundation for DragonWeave© GEN 3.

When the first fabric came off the loom, it was almost too good to be true. We abused it, washed it, dried it, and like Damascus steel, the fabric got better with time. We could say it was engineered, but that’s too technical, we could say it was forged, but that’s too literal. It’s the union of ideas, technology, engineering, bio-mechanics, and inspired by the art of Jiu-Jitsu itself. Simply put, the RIFT was SYNTHESIZED.

The culmination of 5 years of learning, weaving, manufacturing, bleeding, and training birthed not just a textile, but a product that should never exist. And the only reason it was created was because we decide to build a factory in the woods of Maine 5 years ago. The RIFT was born because it had to be.

All seams are locked together in such symmetry and flow, that the seams themselves terminate to a singular point. Watching the RIFT come together is like watching a Russian ballet. It’s so perfect that after the final stitch has been complete, not a single thread is left to trim.

The Difference is Our Proprietary Technologies

The Rift Gi isn't just different, our sizing for this Gi has also changed.
The Rift will fit different from Origin Gis of the past.

We've based our patterns off of standard American sizing and because these Gis are an out of the box fit, there will be no shrinking of the product.

Therefore, it is important to order your Rift Gi based off of your standard T-Shirt or Jacket size.
These sizing guidelines should be used as a guide only, not an end-all.

    This Gi

Have you ever rolled naked ? No, because that's gross. This Gi however, is the closest you'll ever come to it as far as quality and comfort is concerned.

    Great Gi

Posted by Jonathan Nordland on Feb 4th 2020

I bought this gi because it's made in the USA instead of India. Beyond that, the gi is the best fitting, most comfortable, and indestructible piece of hug fighting apparel I've ever bought.

    Rift Gi

If anyone is not sure if the price is worth it, let me tell you. It is. By far the most comfortable Gi I have ever worn. The stitching looks incredible, and is unbelievably soft. This thing is more comfortable than my pajamas. I get excited to just put it on yet alone roll. I’m a small guy, 5’7” 140 lbs, so the small size fit me perfect.

    2019 White Rift

After 3 months or so, I can say this is an exceptional product. It is very light, top almost feels invisible when wearing, and material seems unaffected by use (durable). Top material is a little "slippery" as compared to traditional gi's, which also seems a good thing. While the price is quite a bit higher than a traditional cotton gi, the design and craftsmanship shows. The value is there for the price. The only draw back I have seen is you are going to have to ride out the oogling and razing at the dojo for a while. "Looks like you can where that to the office". "oooh nice gi". "Can I touch it". I received all that, and was a little sheepish for having such a nice garment. Yet, after a month or so it was over. I would (and have) recommend(ed) this product.

    Rift gi

Unbelievable quality - almost too nice to let someone grab onto! The jacket is like a shirt - so light, superb fit and the material is unlike any other gi I’ve had (and I’ve owned a lot). Highly recommended, and a great insight into what’s possible.

    2019 Origin White Rift

Looks great, feels great, it's light, thin, soft and very clearly strong. I have a good feeling that this gi will hold up for a long time. I got the DEF gi when it first came out, I wear it to almost every training session, it's still going strong, no complaints. It's because of that gi that I decided I'll only buy Origin made gis. They are the best. I will buy again.

    Really Impressed

Posted by R. Clay on Jan 7th 2020

I've only had a short time using this Gi, but I'm really impressed. Shockingly light weight. I'm 5'9 165 & it's a perfect fit. The jacket is very pliable, no stiffness in movement. Jacket is thin, (I like) but the strength is definitely present. My previous gi was bamboo. I thought that was easy to maneuver while wearing. This takes "freedom of movement" to a whole new level. That is probably my favorite part of this gi so far. Having the velcro on the pants & the ability to tighten with the belt is something I'm glad to have & didn't know what I was missing. It is costly, but the worth is in its wear & use. This was worth the cost. I believe in paying for quality stuff. This is one of those purchases I'm glad I made.
