ORIGIN "DEF DNA" BJJ GI - Made in America

There is no better value or competition gi in the world of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.

Our DEF DNA is a brand new take on an old school weave. Featuring American Smart Pearl© Gen 3.

The DEF DNA comes standard with Origin Pro Pants. For athletes who demand more during competition, choose the DEF DNA. 100% designed, woven and manufactured in the USA.

We developed a proprietary, pre-shrunk PolySynth© yarn, engineered to be 10x stronger than our existing yarn, and 100x stronger than the industry standard. When twisted, the hexagonal structure of the staple fibers interlock with one another, allowing moisture to to pass between the weave, but not get absorbed into the yarn itself. This would be the foundation for American Smart Pearl© GEN 3.

When the first fabric came off the loom, it was almost too good to be true. We abused it, washed it, dried it, and like Damascus steel, the fabric got better with time. We could say it was engineered, but that’s too technical, we could say it was forged, but that’s too literal. It’s the union of ideas, technology, engineering, bio-mechanics, and inspired by the art of Jiu-Jitsu itself.

    Best gi I own!

Posted by Tj on Oct 3rd 2018

This is my fifth gi and after one wash and dry it fits like a glove. Love the weave of the jacket. Also, I very impressed with how fast the jacket and pants dry compared to my other gis. Highly recommend to anyone looking for a high quality gi made in the USA. Thank you!

    The path...

Posted by Bastian Cowsert on Sep 17th 2018

Don't think, just pull the trigger. This is my first GI and I bought it right before I started training at a studio that STRONGLY suggests that you buy the "studio" GI. So... now I have two GIs and the difference is night and day. The DEF GI fits true to the size chart. I got the A2 Long as my arms are a little long (normally wear 36-37" collared shirts).

The material can remain stiff or you can soften it up depending on how you wash it (instructions included). I decided to soften it up. I hang dry it and it dries at least twice as fast as my other GI.

It is a little more money than the "standard" GI you can find online but as Stephen R. Covey stated in his book (7 habits of highly effective people) you must "begin with the end in mind." The end for me is years down the road being a beast on the mat wearing a GI born and raised in the USA.

My favorite gi in my collection

Posted by Joseph W Shaw II on Jul 12th 2018

I own 8 gi's now, including a black Axion that I have yet to wear because my black DEF gi fits like a glove and is now my favorite. First, off, I'm a big guy (6'4" 270lbs, size XL t-shirt and 40x32" pants), so I was hesitant to trust the sizing chart. I wear an A5 in pretty much every brand but Origin, which had me sized at an A4, but it fits perfectly. I have worn this gi religiously since I received it after Father's Day, and all of my other Gi's are feeling neglected. The Pro Pants are amazing, and I am enjoying the simplicity of the belt system. These are the first pants I've trained in that don't end up coming down on me during training. I don't ever want to go back to drawstrings ever again. The kimono is light but very strong. After two weeks of rolling in it and immediately cold water washing it and hang drying, the fit has stayed perfect. Best of all, where it takes most of my gi's 24-36 or more hours to hang dry, I can hang this one up at 10 PM and it is dry when I get up at 5 AM, and that is without using a fan to speed things up. My Fuji academy issue, 93Brand, and Hypnotik gi's all require a box fan to dry within 24 hours, and the Fuji has taken as long as 48 hours before.

This was my first order with Origin, but I had communicated with them via text a week prior while looking at several different items (spats, rashguards), and they were quick to provide answers to my questions and sizing inquiries. Apparently, Pete and I are sized very similarly, which may explain why this fits so well.

I am planning to pick up another one of these, probably in white (a color I actively avoid because it gets dingy so quickly), or maybe just another black one so this one won't wear so quickly. I'm sure at some point I'll use another one of my gi's, but not any time soon. I'm an Origin fan for life.

Best gi I own for an awesome price

Posted by Kenny on Jun 8th 2018

First off I would like to state I have a hard time finding gi's. Being 275 and 5'10" makes sizes weird for me and I hate to get alterations. I was recommended Origin by another guy at my gym because you could choose pants based on your actual pants waist and length size and not the A# system (A4's are too long, A3's are to tight). I went with the Jocko because it came with pro pants, the gi looks awesome, and for the price, it didn't seem like a bad deal. I went with an A5 top and 40x32 pants (I wear size 38 pants). The top was a little big at first but I emailed Origin and they got right back to me and recommended I send it through the wash and shrink it. Sent it through the wash on warm water and drier and it fits PERFECTLY. When I say perfect, I really mean perfect, like I have no other gi that fits and feels better. The materials are top notch, its soft but feel sturdy. The pants I had to send back and went a size up. Their customer service is the best (thanks for all the help Amanda!) and their return policy is great. No questions asked to return on the pants, sent them back, got the next size up and they are perfect (and for made to order pants they came back in less than a week). I cant recommend this gi enough if you're a big person and have trouble finding the perfect fit gi. It's definitely worth the price and the Jocko gi just looks plain badass. Thank you Origin, you have a customer for life.

    Best gi I've owned

Posted by Chris Mio on Jun 6th 2018

I'd heard of Origin but didn't know anything about them until I heard Pete Roberts on Jocko's podcast, then knew I needed to support this American company!! Best gi I've owned, out of the bag I first noticed the top notch craftsmanship. Fit is excellent, I like the athletic cut! I've owned Howard Combat, Atama, Live Love Fight, Fuji, Nous Defions and this outclasses them all. Customer service is top notch also. I ordered pants a little too big and they quickly exchanged them.
    Great company!

    LOVE IT!

Posted by Jamie on May 29th 2018

I ordered the white Gi first but seeing as I roll primarily with females, I opted to purchase the black Gi as well (to avoid makeup stains). These Gi are HANDS DOWN a cut above the rest. My order arrived in less than a week and the fit feels custom to my body type. I'l never buy Gi from anyone but ORIGIN.

    I'm in love

Posted by tau on May 17th 2018

The first thing you notice about the gi is its material; like the other reviewer said, light shines right through it, so it's extremely light and breathable.

The next thing you realize is that the pants are probably the best gi pants ever made; material and fit were perfect and the swiveloc belt should be sport standard (but is unfortunately ibjjf illegal).

I ordered the rashguard with the gi, and it's a bit small; I recommend ordering a size up.

10/10 fully recommend, will definitely buy from these guys again if they release another jocko related gi.

    Suffers no mediocrity!

Posted by Brian Oravetz on May 15th 2018

I became an Origin customer when Pete first launched the company; starting with the original black and blue gi's made in Pakistan. Pete knew how to work quality control; and he created an amazing gi way back then. Not suffering from complacency he started manufacturing in the US, and he raised the bar, making what I thought were perfect gi's.

The always forward mentality, never digging in, Origin releases this gi with the perfect message, and as with all of the other Origin gi's, it lives up to and shines perfectly on the origin of Origin; perfection achieved, appreciated, then improved upon.

    Not your average pearl weave

    Posted by bereans8@yahoo.com on May 14th 2018

I ordered this Gi after purchasing the flagship axiom kimono a few months ago. I was a bit hesitant, thinking that this jacket would be a lesser version of my previous purchase. I expected this to be a standard pearl weave with Origin’s craftsmanship and design. It is not. This gi is every bit as impressive as my axiom. It has the same great stiff collar. The cut is very functional. And the textile is very breathable and feels very light. ( I would be curious to see what the gsm is) if you are looking for something “better” than the usual pearl weave gi’s; this is every bit “it”. And of course it’s American made. By the way, don’t be surprised by how many Jocko fans give you a head nod, or want to talk to you about the podcast.
